DANCING WITH THE STARS marks 10th Anniversary with ABC
Get ready to break out those dancing shoes because ABC’s hit reality television show Dancing with the Stars is set to return March 16th, just in time to celebrate its’ 10th anniversary with ABC. Just recently, ABC revealed the 10th anniversary cast of “DWTS,” which will include the return of professional dancer and last year’s five-time champion finalist, Derek Hough as well as Keo Motsepe, last year’s trophy ball champion Witney Carson alongside two-time champion Mark Ballas, Tony Dovolani and Peta Murgatroyd.
According to People.com, other dancers returning include Val Chmerkovskiy, Sharna Burgess, Allison Holker, Emma Slater and Artem Chigvintsev. The only ones not scheduled to return are Karina Smirnoff, who posted on instagram recently that she wanted to pursue new opportunities, and Cheryl Burke, who also decided to leave for the same reason.
Besides having professional dancers showing off their dancing talents on “Dancing with the Stars”, the show also features some big name celebrities who are also putting their dancing skills to the test. All of the celebrities are often paired up with a dancer in which each pairing will then engage in a series of dancing competitions— ultimately in the end, the couple who will wind up having the lowest score, will either be up for elimination or be sent home altogether. At the show’s two-hour season finale, the show’s judges as well as television viewers will then determine which couple will take home the infamous mirror ball trophy which is primarily handed out to every season winner of “DWTS“.
Celebrities that have been casted for this season will feature television actress Suzanne Somers, singer Patti LaBelle, Michael Sam (the first openly gay NFL draft pick), Shark Tank’s”Robert Herjavec, and Willow Shields from Hunger Games. Shields will be the youngest competitor on DWTS. The famous Mirror Ball dancing trophy is awarded each season to the winner.
Forit is the show’s 10th anniversary, executive producer Rob Wade has compiled a standout group and this season fans can expect lots of dancing, humor and big-name celebrity stars.“We wanted to put the best of the best together for the 10th anniversary season which also marks the 20th edition of the popular show,” Wade told USA Today. “It’s got a classic Dancing with the Stars feel, where you have some great human-interest stories, some great celebrity names, some great dancing, some great comedy and humor,” he added.
The couples that will be paired off together will consist of Olympic gold medalist Nastia Liukin with Derek Hough, singer Patti LaBelle with Artem Chigvintsev, actress Suzanne Somers with Tony Dovolani, actor and musician Riker Lynch with Allison Holker, singer/producer and LMFAO member Redfoo with Emma Slater, football player Michael Sam with Peta Murgatroyd, Iraq veteran and personal trainer Noah Galloway with Sharna Burgess, Robert Herjavec with Kym Johnson, model and actress Charlotte McKinley with Keo Motsepe, actress Willow Shields with Mark Ballas, and Rumer Willis (Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s daughter) with Valentin Chmerkovskiy.
Television actress, Suzanne Somers who is most notably known for her roles in Three’s Company and Step by Step is still in great shape for her age and is looking forward to competing on this season’s Dancing with the Stars. “It feels like the perfect time in my life to do this,” Somers told the USA Today. “For all the books I’ve been writing about health and taking care of yourself and a new way to age, this is my opportunity to prove that it’s not the years, it’s your energy — and I have great energy,” she added.
Another celebrity expected to appear on DWTS will be Iraq war veteran and personal trainer Noah Galloway, who lost his left leg (above the knee) as well as his left arm (above the elbow) after being injured by an explosive device in Iraq. Since the show typically requires upper body strength in addition to endurance, it will be interesting to see how this will play out when it will be time for Galloway to make his debut on the dance floor with his fellow dance partner in tow.
According to People.com, those dancers that will not be returning to DWTS will include Karina Smirnoff, who recently stated on her instagram page that she has decided to leave in order to pursue new opportunities and Cheryl Burke, who had an outstanding nine-year run with the show, has decided to leave to pursue other opportunities as well. Senior judge Len Goodman, announced in December that he might be leaving the show sometime in the near future due to personal reasons. It is still a possibility though that Goodman might still return to DWTS next spring when DWTS in the United Kingdom is not being filmed or in its production stages.
According to ABC, hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews are both expected to return to DWTS as well as judges Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, Julianne Hough and Bruno Tonioli — all of which are responsible for scoring the dancers’ performances. Season 20 of Dancing with the Stars is set to premiere Monday, March 16 at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
