Lamar Odom Found Unconscious
Lamar Odom, a former NBA player who became a hit reality television star after marrying Khloe Kardashian, was hospitalized Tuesday after he was found unconscious at a Nevada brothel. The 35-year-old, who won two championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, had been staying at the Love Ranch in Crystal, Nevada for three days before the incident.
“He was found lying facedown by two women who went to check on him Tuesday afternoon,” Dennis Hof, the brothel’s owner, told The Associated Press. “He just wanted to get away, have a good time and relax,” Hof said, adding that Odom was “throwing up all kinds of stuff” when the brothel’s staff members tried to turn him on his side. Hof also mentioned that Odom was taking an herbal sexual stimulant, but he did not know if he was taking anything else.
Officials managed to stabilize Odom at a nearby hospital, but they were unable to transport him by helicopter, because Odom is 6-foot-10 and would not fit in the allotted space. Instead, he was transported by ambulance to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, according to a statement from the NYE County Sheriff’s Office.
The website TMZ, which was one of the first media outlets to provide minute to minute updates on Odom’s condition, reported that his former wife, Khloe Kardashian, was at the hospital with him.
The couple was married in 2009, separated in 2013 and their divorce was finalized in July of this year. “But since Odom has been associated with the Kardashian name, his every move has been well-documented, both in Kardashian-related projects and under the paparazzi’s glare,” explains The New York Times. When the couple were still together, they chose to broadcast their relationship live on shows such as Keeping up with the Kardashians as well as on their own reality show, Khloe and Lamar.
In an interview with Complex magazine this past summer, Kardashian said that she and Odom are still on good terms with one another. “When you genuinely feel like that was the right relationship,” she said, “you’re supposed to give it all you can.”
Odom, who won two NBA championship titles while playing with the Los Angeles Lakers, has struggled with drug addiction since he and Kardashian separated. In 2013, Odom was pulled over for a DUI in Los Angeles and later checked in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center.
Odom, a former native of Queens, New York, played high school basketball for Christ the King in Middle Village and then for a prep school in Florida where he was considered to be one of the best basketball players in the country.
Odom wanted to attend the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for college, but questions surrounding his test scores arose so the school ended up dropping him. Later that year, he was arrested in Las Vegas for soliciting a prostitute. Eventually, he ended up playing one year of basketball at the University of Rhode Island.
After Odom was chosen as the fourth overall pick in the 1999 draft by the Los Angeles Clippers, his battle with drugs soon began to escalate. According to The New York Times, in 2001 he was suspended by the NBA after he was found to have violated the league’s drug policies.
“It’s something that can’t happen again,” Odom said at the time. “Hopefully, now I can put it behind me and start to better myself.”
Odom’s performance fell in his final two seasons, one with the Los Angeles Clippers and the other with the Dallas Mavericks. In 2014, his career came to an abrupt end after making a brief debut with the New York Knicks and with a team in Spain. He was just 34.
Excel Sports Management, the company representing Odom, released a statement on Wednesday, saying, “We are staying close to the situation but have no additional information or comment at this time.”
