The Race for 2020: Political Calculus & Political Hard Ball

After last week’s gaffe and dust-up with Senator Booker, the polls are indicating that Joe Biden is holding his substantial lead over the field of Democratic hopefuls. He remains the front runner for the Democratic nomination as the candidate to run against Trump for the Presidency…..

Personally, I’m not happy about the prospect of Biden as the Democratic standard bearer for the next cycle but,  if it should come to that, I’m prepared to soldier on in the knowledge that if Trump and Trumpism aren’tt roundly and soundly defeated this time, the country is fucked, to put it mildly.

In my view, the calculus goes something like this:

  1. The election cannot be close enough to call a Democratic victory into question. The win should be by at least 10 points or more to ensure Russian interference and/or collusion, or Schumer’s fast tracked, and Republican packed, federal courts are not able to taint or alter the results…
  2. The candidate’s coattails should be long enough and strong enough to flip the Senate and defeat enough Republican Senate incumbents to topple and remove McConnell from his racist/obstructionist perch as Senate Majority Leader.

In many ways and respects the defeat of McConnell in the Senate is as important as removing Trump from the Oval Office.

  1. The margin of victory must be wide enough to constitute a clear mandate to clean up the mess that will be left in the wake of Trump’s administrative debacle and executive incompetence.

4.The choice of a VP candidate should be a clarion message to the party and the populace that a Democratic win is about preparing for,  and moving toward, the future and not simply a return to some mythical past where the status quo was the political comfort zone…

The VP pick absolutely cannot be a white man if Biden gets the nomination.

5.  The approach to this election must be LOSING IS NOT AN OPTION…

This is an all hands on deck, pull out all the stops, moment.

There is absolutely no room for ambivalence, hesitation, or conflict. This is a “win at all costs” situation and street fight.

Let there be no doubt that the Democrats and their candidate are ready willing and able to do what it takes to win, even if that means “by any means necessary”.
