Let Them Eat Cars
Elizabeth II loved to drive, but was never required to obtain a driver’s license…
Being above the law is a privilege reserved to those white folks who believe they’re born to rule.
Don’t believe me? Ask Trump!
Valued at more than10 million pounds, here’s a list of some of the vehicles in her collection:
Bentley Bentayga
(custom-built) 2015 Range Rover LWB Landaulet
Twin custom state Bentleys
Land Rover Defender
Aston Martin Volante DB6
If you need to know what the vehicles look like please consult your Google machine…
Gas guzzlers all, she had no concern for the price of a gallon of petrol…
As I have always said: It must be nice to have enough money to never be worried about having enough money.
For most people, especially in the Western world, including kings and queens, It doesn’t matter where it comes from, or how it’s acquired, having it is all that matters.
Having too much wealth at the expense of others who are less fortunate because of your criminality and greed is about as immoral as it gets…
Somebody once said “let them eat cake”. An apt reflection of the attitude of the super rich and extremely well to do…
The woman who had more wealth than many of the populations in the 14 nation commonwealth she ruled, acquired and accumulated a collection of automobiles the value of which could easily feed the many thousands of her ‘subjects’ who remain hungry as a consequence of the Royal ‘privilege’ of inhumane indifference…

Elizabeth drove on private property, property allocated to the monarchy, not on public roads where she could kill someone. No one in the US needs a license to do that.

Great point Kosh…
But, relative to the thrust of this post, it is, admittedly, a minor point at best…
Also, keep in mind that, for most of us, the driver’s license is an essential element of the rite of passage into adulthood and citizenship…
It has become the primary form of identification in the contemporary industrialized world and marketplace…
Most of us ‘don’t leave home without it’.

Funny thing about that. Almost everyone has one, yet, almost no one knows that it is a “driver license.” It has the unique characteristic of an official document as an idiom.

Bitey, your comment is certainly true enough…However, as a minor aspect of this post, it is well wide of the mark of the primary content and purpose of the thought expressed here…
I’m not sure that I understand why you and Koshersalaami have chosen to dawdle on a matter as limited as the idiomatic ‘driver license’.

Life is like a mosaic. Experience and knowledge are like tiny tiles in a giant image. Some tiny, subtle stones can be overlooked, and the experience can be lost without someone with the special perspective to bring attention to its value. From my perspective as a former police officer, I have had the specific instruction about this particular tiny thing that reveals a broad tendency in human behavior, and about our language in particular. So, pointing out the idiom is not about the idiom, per se. It is about the human tendency to make idioms, and the manner in which things change without notice. The gem Tiger’s Eye starts out as asbestos. Over time it hardens and becomes a gem. The manner of change is mysterious. I find change fascinating. Idioms fascinate me in a similar way.

Bitey,
There are times your prose is closer to poetry.
It causes me to read it more carefully.
