This was made necessary by a formatting problem on the mobile version of the website. At the former size of the featured images, the headlines were wrapping around the featured image, which trashed the home page design on mobile platforms. That has now been corrected by increasing the size of the featured image.
We will be increasing the number of items in the sidebar to compensate.
If you cannot find the excerpt box, you can turn it on by going to the Screen Options tab at the top right hand corner of the screen, right under your screen name.
Open the Screen Options and make sure the Excerpts is checked off. If it is not checked off, click on the box to turn it on. You should only have to do this once. Note that all of the options in the Screen Options Box must be turned on in order for the system to operate properly.
Also note that the Excerpt box may pop up in the right hand column or underneath the text entry window, so look for it in both places.

Morning, Ron. I could not and did not watch this vid. It’s a snuff film. This creative young free-spirited skateboarding photographer is like my students, and his snuffing crushes my heart. A different vid to watch is his skateboard video, which has gone viral, also his photography portfolio website. He was a joyful soul. I prefer to watch that, rather than his cruel death.
If there is a spark in any of this, it’s the speed of accountability, administered by a fierce Black woman police chief who accepts no macho nonsense. If anyone will bring down Tr*mp, it’ll be Fani Willis and/or Letitia James, neither of whom are scared of him one teeny bit.

Suzanne,
I posted the ‘snuff film’ as a historical juxtaposition to the depictions I posted with it as evidence of the simple fact and truth that nothing has changed and the idea that:
“There’s really nothing new or unusual about 5 black cops beating a black man to death…”
I would agree that: “If there is a spark in any of this, it’s the speed of accountability…”
However, keep in mind that the 5 black cops who committed this heinous and horrendous crime did what they believed what was expected of them by a culture and society that historically and currently places little or no value on black lives and the civil and human rights of black citizens…
This atrocity speaks for itself and it speaks volumes for the nature of the culture and society in America…
It’s a shame that ‘this creative young free-spirited skateboarding photographer’ is only getting attention now because he was treated like garbage being removed from the street.
If the black women you refer to are anything at all like my mother was, Trump is done…
The problem here is that his cult following will remain stoked and motivated to continue the perpetration and perpetuation of the history of impervious indifference to the centuries old plight and grievances of black and brown people in this country….

Ron, after George Floyd, I decided to read only books by Black authors. We butted heads about The 1619 Project, but there is plenty about Black on Black racism there. Most White people think of this entirely wrongly, which is why everyone should be required to read that book before they are allowed to apply for their tax refund. Ibram X Kendi’s books How to Be An Antiracist and How to Raise An Antiracist are 100% about the same issue. People need to be educated. It’s a game changer.
Which is why, not to open another can of worms, I am incensed and boiling at Ron Desantis’s attempts to dictate Florida state college curriculum, as well as high school AP courses in AA History. He is a more terrible person than Trump by hundreds of percents. As a former educator, perhaps you feel this way too. His tactics are outlined in detail a hundred years ago in hundreds of the pages of The 1619 Project. He’s just following a playbook.
Ennyhoo. I just cannot watch that vid. Sorry.

One more thing. Those five cops were also into that hive macho mind that also happens at bars and sports bleachers. Look! A skinny man! One starts the beating, they all pile on, then brag about how many hits they delivered. Maybe they didn’t realize they’d killed the skinny man, just taught him some kind of perverse lesson. To feminist me, it was not only a snuff, or a lynching, but also a gang rape, a violation by five strong burly men on a small man who could not resist them.

P.S. let’s not argue about the weeds in this, ok? Just typing that shit I’m in tears. You’re hurting more, are entitled to hurt far more, but it’s all painful to me too.

Suzanne,
Here’s my perspective on the matter:
01/29/2023 @ 12:36 pm
Do you mean me by this meme? Honestly, I can’t tell.
Why try to make a White person say they have a Black friend? It’s a trope and a GOP dog whistle.
You’ve known me for a long time. Having no children, it feels like I’ve had more than 3300 other peoples’ children, a third of them POC. When police murder brand new young people, it crushes me. Of course our pains are not the same, but that doesn’t mean I don’t get to feel any. This isn’t a contest.
It also isn’t an argument I want to have with you, as I said upstream.
01/29/2023 @ 1:11 pm
Suzanne,
I consider you to be a friend….
That should tell you a good deal about what and to whom I believe the statement is applicable….
It is certainly not applicable to you!
There is no argument here….

well, ditto.
glad we got that straight then 🙂

The only thing that bothers me about the speed at which the police faced justice is the fact that that kind of justice is administered so much faster to Black cops.
However, the next time some smartass asks you “What about Black on Black killings?” point to this and say that getting justice for a Black kid killed by Blacks sure is easier than getting it for a Black kid killed by Whites. For Black on Black killings, the justice system somehow runs a lot smoother.

Kosh,
Glad to see that you noticed the phenomenon.

When I first heard what happened to the cops in this case I thought “Wow, they’re coming down on the cops faster than I’ve ever seen. This is a positive development.” Then I saw a picture of the cops and went “oh. That’s why.”
02/01/2023 @ 8:47 am
You know in cases like this we’d normally be hearing all about how the victim was a thug and we’d hear all sorts of defenses of the cops. Are we hearing that this time? Are White guys coming out of the woodwork defending the cops? I’m not following this closely but I’m curious if you’ve heard about anything.
02/01/2023 @ 9:35 am
Not a peep!
These cops were fired and charged within a few days of committing the multiple crimes involved and no one has stepped up to holler about waiting until all of the investigatory facts are in.

“One episode, titled “Fear,” traces recent police and vigilante violence against Black Americans to the dehumanization of enslavement and the vicious slave patrols that existed before Emancipation, which deputized White people to monitor Black people’s movements, be suspicious of their motives, and insert themselves into their business.”Â
Ron, am gifting the WaPo article (in case you don’t subscribe, click the link below and you’re in) that quotes the above in this morning’s featured article on Nikole Hannah-Jones. It addresses aspects of your post here, and also The 1619 Project, and Nikole Hannah-Smith’s ascension to Black History Goddess, to the apparent chagrin and fear of many. Presently, I’m getting torn apart for saying why I love her in the comment section. So disappointing in a liberal publication, yet unsurprising.
Ennyhoo. She is a titan and a badass with an amplifier, and I know you’d enjoy, if not the book, the new Hulu series she’s just made.
