Alan Milner on Bindlesnitch
“…At this point, I consider Bindlesnitch a failure. Not in the design but in the marketing of it. Robert and I keep paying to keep it running and we fix it when it breaks but I no longer harbor any illusions that it will accomplish anything because the people we knew on Open Salon simply didn’t show up. If they had, it would have worked…”
Alan Milner in his comment to my post at:

My reply:
“If a fact-based, snark-free environment deters people from showing up and signing on, then so be it…”
What do you think about the status of bindlesnitch?

It hasn’t always been fact based and snark free. Compared to other sites, relatively so.
Right now you have a small population but one that mostly gets along. I’d say by my count there are eight semi-active members, all from OS, and if a lot of people we used to know saw that membership list they’d be interested.
However, there is the issue of cost, what it’s costing you. What are we talking here?

Ronald, for the life of me, I can’t figure out what point you were trying to make with this post. Maybe you could elaborate. Not for nothing, I wasn’t logged in when I tried to post this comment and couldn’t post it because if you are not logged you have to submit an email address but there isn’t anyplace for a nonmember to submit an email address. I guess I will have to fix that, if I can.

My point is that I wouldn’t consider bindlesnitch a failure. .
And I’m willing to put some money where my keyboard is….
To quote Kosh in this regard:

Oh, nine members. Not eight.
I’d list them but I’m afraid someone will slip my mind and I’ll insult them

“I didn’t notice that Alan didn’t write the post.”
This isn’t the first time you’ve missed a salient and essential element of something I’ve posted and responded within the context of your misunderstanding…
That’s not like you…
Are you OK?

I think so. Thanks for asking

The current out of pocket costs are around $24 a month for the hosting service and around $600 a year to renew the licenses for the plugins that make the site work, which would work out to around $74 a month. I could host an unlimited number of websites on the same hosting plan or actually resell hosting services to offset the cost. Right this minute I am not pressed to cover the costs but I know that I am facing some upcoming expenses. I have also just come up with an interesting idea, having figured out a way to offer people the ability to develop hypertext documents that would work like Wikipedia entries and would enable users to write longer articles that would be broken up into segments that could be accessed through hyperlinks. (I used to love hypertext systems when I was writing technical manuals. All kinds of creative stuff that you can do with them.) I
I have noticed that postings are getting shorter and shorter on Facebook;…and longer and longer on Twitter. People post longer items on Twitter by posting them as a succession of tweets which is actually very close to the hypertext idea.
Virtually no one who has used Bindle makes much use of the built-in linking system. If I were a good webmaster I would try to teach people to do that, but that doesn’t make much sense for casual writing.

You can count on me for $10.00 per month…
If everyone here commits to 10.00 per month, you will have an operating surplus that can be used for upgrades, maintenance, and marketing.
How about the creation of an editorial board consisting of ‘founding contributors’ or some such as recognition and acknowledgement of the commitment to keep the site afloat…

Ron,
Alan wants this to be joint. He doesn’t like being sole owner or sole operator. In the meantime, on Alan’s latest post, Bitey has asked for a ballpark of what programming help would cost.

We can swing that. Make the arrangements and we will fund it.
