Site Closing, continuing to gather?
The site is getting expensive to maintain again and there’s really no traffic left, so Alan is about to stop supporting it.
So here’s my question:
There are very few people left active here. Are any of you interested in some form of email circle? We’d just have a list and everyone would see all traffic. Right now there’s not enough traffic to be disruptive.
I will admit that at the moment I’m kind of apathetic but it’s a way to keep in contact if anyone’s interested.
Or not.

I know how to reach you and Bill Beck so it wouldn’t interest me.
Happy Holidays !

Kindly let me know at your early convenience.
Although the Thwaites Glacier slowly dies I love the sound of my typing!

I don’t know whether there will be any kind of gathering convention or not. Because the group is so small, a lot of us have each others’ email addresses. I don’t think I have a way of getting you an email address in private but we don’t get that many readers here – it’s my s/n at aol.

It all kind of depends on what anyone uses this site for. I’ve mainly used blog sites to talk to the other bloggers. External readers were mostly gravy except on rare occasions at Open. Alan has always wanted external readers. For one thing, that’s where revenue comes from, and of course it’s also where growth comes from. But I think some of this is generational. Most young don’t think in paragraphs and I don’t have patience for twitter or tik tok and I don’t have time for Facebook, nor do I like the organization.

I am very tired of shouting myself hoarse in an empty room. The echoes hurt my head. I am going to use Bindle to store my collected writings. Once I am gone. Satya will stop paying the bills and it will all disappear. No one will notice. So it goes.
The difference between an email thread and simple direct correspondence is that with the email thread, we can have much the same dialogues that we used to have on OS. If you don’t want to deal with someone, simply erase them from your email list and they are gone. If they persist, block them. Easy enough.
If you are in a sensitive situation – if you have a stalker or a reputation to protect -create a new account and no one will know you that you’re you.

“I am very tired of shouting myself hoarse in an empty room.”
I can’t say that I blame you….
However, I don’t think the room is completely empty…
The fact is we are in the room with thousands of bloggers who share our perspectives…
My problem with:
“…we can have much the same dialogues that we used to have on OS…”
The vitriolic garbage and ad hominem attacks seemed to have been the coin of the realm…
Most people left when the name calling arguments and pseudo intellectual bullshit came to a halt…
All we need is one post to go viral or a mention on MSNBC or CNN and the site may well grow beyond the capacities of a single or lone administrator…
I can’t say when or how, but I’m willing to keep trying…

What thousands of bloggers?

“I will admit that at the moment I’m kind of apathetic…”
This is one he’ll of an understatement!
“I don’t have patience for twitter or tik tok and I don’t have time for Facebook, nor do I like the organization.”
AMEN!!!
How is it that you can make the case for not letting the site disappear from the blogosphere while being simultaneously engaged in beating the drum of retreat and defeat?
The email thing is too cumbersome and smacks too much of self denial.
I write because I believe that it is necessary for me to do so…
How many times have I offered to chip in re the expense of keeping the site afloat…
What are the numbers anyway…
If you’ve lost interest or feel that it is no longer necessary or appropriate to engage in civil discourse on matters such as the preservation and defense of American Democracy, why don’t just say so and be done with it?!

BTW
You can’t expect ‘outsiders’ to do more in the way of comment and discussion than we are willing to do for ourselves…
Look at the posts that have absolutely no comment or even acknowledgement…
I have often said that much of the best writing occurs in the comment stream…
And, I’m not talking about flower gardens and sunsets…

So, Alan, let Ron know what it would take for him to keep this open. It’s a fair question.
As to no comments on a post, I generally comment when I have something to say. I don’t always.

Koshersalaami,
You’ve been at an uncharacteristic loss of words for quite some time…
Even if we do little more than exchange niceties or pleasantries we do the endeavor a disservice by exercising the right to remain silent…
I would have have thought that Trump’s latest bigoted gaffe re Jewish people would have evoked a reaction or response r r the idea or notion that while he may not speak ‘for’ most conservative Republicans, he speaks ‘to’ his base in language that resonates.

I have no comment about Trump’s antisemitism. It!’s not new, it’s not shocking.

“So, Alan, let Ron know what it would take for him to keep this open.”
Bitey made a similar inquiry some time back…To my knowledge he got no response re the “numbers”…
This site started out as a cooperative with members theoretically sharing ad revenue…
Seems to me that we could share the burden of the expense/cost of maintaining/running the site.
if it isn’t prohibitive, we could do so on the same basis/principle as the profit sharing concept….

Im a pain in the ass, i know.
But id def chip in so i could join in, however rarely.
But i get it.

It can suck mightily.

You don’t have to get too deep. My last post was about a dog bowl.
On the other hand, there are arguments developing on my dog bowl post thread. That takes a special talent and I apparently have it.
