It’s his followers and supporters who must not be underestimated…

The other people whose duplicity shouldn’t ever be “underestimated” are the people in leadership positions within the Democratic Party. These are the same ones who “elevated” Trump in the first place (in the misguided believe that he would be easy for Hillary to beat), who end up pitching histrionic fits and then agree to what he wants and who refuse to do things like get his tax returns or start impeachment proceedings. That is tacit support just as vile as what his direct supports provide.

The fact very simply is that the people who voted for Trump are responsible for voting for Trump. He has really only lied to them about one important thing. Not to the rest of us, those lies are now difficult to even count, but he has only lied to his supporters about one thing that mattered to them. He lied to them about being wealthy enough not to be driven by money in office. The rest of his promises to his supporters, implicit and explicit, he has been scrupulous about keeping. Why do you think he continues to fight for the wall? His implicit promise to protect his supporters from PC is one he’s kept to a horrifying extent. His promise to stop allowing other countries to take advantage of the US economically is something he’s continuously tried to keep, albeit usually ineptly, from NATO participants who leave paying for defense to us to the Chinese and tariffs. He has kept the faith with all those bigots and jingoists. Our ace in the hole is that his supporters don’t constitute the majority of voters.
And this is where Amy’s point comes into play: The only way to beat Trump is to mobilize our bigger base completely enough to get him and his allies out of office. That’s what we didn’t accomplish in 2016, and the numbers bear this out. Trump got no more votes than Romney did but HIllary got fewer votes than Obama did.
